You know the beginning of every year when you feel the excitement and ambition of a fresh new set of goals? And then that feeling 3 weeks later when you’ve lost your motivation and have forgotten all about them? That can’t be just me, right?!
Here are some tips on how to stay motivated with your goals throughout the year!
1. Be mindful about possible limitations to your workouts.
Setting goals that are too extreme and intense usually lead to a fast burn out. For instance, as a mom of 4 young kids- setting a goal of going to the gym every morning for 90 minutes would be unattainable for me with my busy life. Keep your goals realistic to your existing daily routine. Setting up a space to do workouts from home where I could be close to, or even involve, my children really helped me to fast-track my fitness goals.
2. Create an accountability system.
Find a way to check in with yourself each week to see where you are and where you can go next with your workout routines. This could be a journal, a note on your phone, a calendar you check off. Keeping something that visibly shows you your efforts will be helpful to stay consistent and motivated.
3. Set short-term fitness goals to promote your long-term goals.
Anything worth working for takes time and daily effort. Let yourself be proud when you achieve all those little milestones along the way. It is your combined daily efforts that yield your big end result. If you are starting with the end goal in mind, like “I want a firmer, more toned booty”, then create small goals like “I’ll do 2 – 3 glute-focused workouts in my weekly routine.”
4. Understanding the “WHY” behind what you want is key.
What is your driving force behind your goal? Is it to improve your health, or to have more energy? Is it to be able to run around with your kids more and keep up with their energy? Whatever is driving you, give yourself time to really reflect on this when you are setting your goals. When you have your “why” nailed down, it becomes your fire and your motivation throughout the year. Give your goals meaning and value when you set them.
5. Find gratitude throughout your journey.
Not everyday will be perfect. There will be setbacks that will likely feel discouraging. There are going to be times you want to give up. On those hard days, look for things in your life and your journey that you are grateful for. Finding gratitude, no matter how big or how small, will have a powerful effect on your mindset and your ability to get back on track to working on your goals.
I can’t wait for you to achieve your goals this year; I’m rooting for you! You are capable and full of strength and nothing is going to stop you from whatever those goals may be.
